Horton Cup, Ford Lake, Ypsilanti (Practice site)
Saline Crew hosts the Horton Cup Regatta this Saturday, October 3 from 9 -11.
The Horton Cup came about as scrimmage between Saline crew and Ann Arbor Huron in the spring of 2004. We did it, because Coach Fiske's novice coach was the Head coach of Huron and we wanted to give our rowers the experience of racing a dual meet and give them exposure to Ann Arbor rowing club at Argo Pond.
The second year of the event, I decided to add to the fun and brought Tim Horton's doughnuts as "medals" for the winning crews. The tradition lives on today. So win a race, Saturday.
Three years ago, I asked the Ann Arbor schools to join us for a Head race on Ford Lake. It is a great place for a head race, the type of crew racing that fall offers. All enjoyed their experience and the Horton Cup moved permanently to the fall at Ford Lake.
The Horton Cup is a cup from Tim Hortons that all of the participating coaches sign then hand over to the "winning" crew. The coaches determine the winning program based on different criteria each year. It is all in good fun and friendly rivalries are born anew for the remainder of the school year.
Below is a pdf of a car registration slip. You hand it to the Lakeshore Apatments guard at the gate to expediate traffic to the regatta.
Rowers are to carpool like a normal practice day. Leaving the bus loop at 7:30 am, just like all Saturday practices.
All rowers are expected to stay until the event is over. Probably noon. They can return with parents then. Let your carpool driver know.
There is probably going to be a chance to see racing up close and personal on the water with Mike Brady in his boat. Watch for a message advertising the opportunity.
There is going to be a parent gathering 9:00 am near the Saline Crew yellow tent. Please watch for details to come.
We won the Horton Cup last year for the first time ever. We going for a repeat.
All rowers are expected the full day, as we like to support all of rowers as they race. Also we have to ALL LOAD the TRAILER and clean up our tent site.
I know that is a lot. I hope it helps. A lot of returning parents can help with details of it all really works at the Horton Cup. Hope to see all of you there.
Row Hornets!
